A Message From The President - Cultural Advocacy Coalition of Oregon

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the chair of the Cultural Advocacy Coalition. I accept this position with enthusiasm and determination.
Growing up in New York meant growing up with cultural programs that enhanced my life, ignited my creativity and taught me to be bold. Although as a young child I didn’t know what I would do for a career, I did know that arts and culture would be at the core.
During my 44 years in education I have ensured that the arts were front and center in my work. It was a priority from my first year as a teacher to my years as the Chief Education Officer for Oregon. As the Director of Administrator Licensure Programs at UO, I developed a transformational Leadership Program that through the arts trained school administrators on possibility thinking and creativity. As a superintendent, I led the creation of an arts school for over 400 students. Throughout my career I have partnered with non-profits to ensure that students have an opportunity for cultural programs in their community.
I remain as determined today as I was as a young child to advocate and work tirelessly for cultural programs. I will use possibility thinking as the chair of the Cultural Advocacy Coalition to make certain that cultural programs grow and thrive in our beloved state of Oregon.
I look forward to working with advocates statewide in the coming year to prepare to renew the Historic Property Tax Assessment program and the Oregon Cultural Trust tax credit. The Trust is truly an innovative, one of a kind program which strengthens arts, heritage and the humanities throughout Oregon and it is imperative that we protect it. Our advocacy efforts will also continue to focus on raising awareness and support for the value of arts education within a whole child education. I hope you will join us in all of this important work.
